applications in the academic areas. It contains three separate areas:
Reading, the more generic area of Learning/Studying, and Math. If
a student has a specific vision or hearing impairment, you may want
to look in those sections as well.

Reading
A variety of alternatives can be considered
for students who are struggling with reading, regardless of the
disability. While there are only a small number of assistive technology
“devices” for this population, there has been a proliferation
of software developed in the last few years that can be extremely
beneficial.

Adapted
Books
Books can be adapted for students at all
reading levels. Some books can be purchased already adapted. Others
can be adapted by editing and simplifying the text, and adding graphic
support using a variety of software programs. Become familiar with
applicable copyright laws before adapting a book of any kind.

Spell
Checkers/Study Aids
Various spell checkers and study aids are
helpful for students who stumble over new words or larger words. A
talking spell checker/dictionary/thesaurus will pronounce the word.
A single word scanner can be of great help to an advanced reader who
struggles with large, multi-syllabic words. Some low tech aids turn
words into manipulatives.

– Reading
E-Books
E-books are another way to allow students
to interact with text. Generally these programs read text aloud
to students in digitized (recorded) speech. Many come with songs,
games and other extension activities to save teachers time. They
are especially useful for students with physical disabilities who
may not be able to hold or turn the pages of the regular print book,
although they are a good choice for all children with disabilities.

and studying supports. Most offer text-to-speech options to read
text aloud to the student. This can be compose text or digital text
imported from some outside source like a scanner or the Internet.
